HRCBM PRESS RELEASE
Date: April 16, 2006
Today Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM) filed a Public Interest Litigation against the Government of Bangladesh under Article 102 of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in the country's High Court division of the Supreme Court. The writ petition is filed in the High Court over the failure of the government authorities concerned in taking proper action against those who perpetrated human rights abuses against the religious minorities, including incidents of killings, rapes and tortures, grabbing of their lands, arson and attacks on their houses, which took place since the general elections held on October 1, 2001.
HRCBM Bangladesh Chapter President Advocate Rabindra Ghosh and Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) Executive President Advocate Manzil Murshid jointly filed the writ petition in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in the court of Mr. Justice Md. Awlad Ali and Mrs. Justice Jinnat Ara.
The Judges of the High Court Division heard the matter partly today and on behalf of the State Deputy Attorney General of Bangladesh took time. The Judges of the High Court Division are expected to pass an order tomorrow on this writ petition.
It is to be noted that HRCBM earlier filed a similar writ petition in 2003. HRCBM expects that the Honorable High court will uphold the rights of minorities guarantied in the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and endow justice to the victims by issuing rule upon the government and taking legal action against the government officials who failed to perform their duties during the incidents of human rights abuses.
