    US embassy greets chief adviser

The US embassy has congratulated President Iajuddin Ahmed on his assumption of the office of chief adviser to the caretaker government, according to a statement issued by the embassy here yesterday.

"The US embassy congratulates President Iajuddin Ahmed on his assumption of duties as chief adviser to the caretaker government. We wish him every success in his pledge to lead Bangladesh to free, fair, and credible elections," the statement said.

Welcoming the relative return of calm to the streets of Dhaka, the embassy urged political party leaders to "exercise maximum restraint and take effective action to prevent any resumption of political violence".
